DINGLETON Road in Melrose will be closed for over three months this summer.

Starting on July 4, the stretch of Dingleton Road running from Dundas Terrance to Eildon Crescent will be closed for 13 weeks while gas main replacement works are carried out.

The road will be closed each day between the hours of 8am and 5pm and at weekends will be open under temporary traffic signals.

For anyone wishing to travel the road during these closed hours, diversions are in place and cars can access Cheifswood Road, which passes the BGH, as an alternative route.

A Scottish Borders Council spokesperson said: "Access to properties affected by the closure will be maintained as far as is reasonably practicable."

Some members of Melrose and District Community council were concerned that this closure will cause major disruption for drivers in the area.

Hannah Adam, spokesperson for gas network company SGN, said: "We’re working in close consultation with Scottish Borders Council to plan this project and we will contact customers in the local area in advance of the work starting.

“To ensure everyone’s safety and allow room to manoeuvre equipment, it will be necessary to temporarily close sections of Dingleton Road to traffic while our engineers work in the road.

"However, whenever possible, we will reopen Dingleton Road at the end of each working day and at weekends. A signed diversion route will be in place for motorists to follow when the road is closed.

“We appreciate this is a key route and would like to reassure the local community we’ll do everything we can to plan this essential work in a way which will minimise disruption as much as possible.”
