SELKIRK Amateur Operatic Society held their annual general meeting last week in the Masonic Halls.

A new committee was elected; Robin Murray agreed to remain as president, with Tracey Freedman appointed treasurer, Lorraine Lynne as secretary, and Andrew Thom as vice president.

Mr Murray welcomed everyone to the meeting and thanked all members of the society for their efforts in putting on this year’s show, Doctor Dolittle.

He announced next year’s show will be Thoroughly Modern Millie, with a production team of Derek Calder as MD, Amy Bryson as Choreographer and Susan Shearer taking on the role as Producer.

Thoroughly Modern Mille is the musical stage production of the 1967 film, which starred Julie Andrews and Mary Tyler Moore.

Set in New York during the rip-roaring twenties, it is the story of a naive young woman’s search for a wealthy husband, she soon gets drawn into the new modern fashions of flapper dresses, Charleston dances, speakeasies and also the more sinister side of white slavery.

Last week's meeting was also an opportunity to recognise the contribution made by three stalwarts of the society, with Raymond D’Agrosa (30 years), Patty Alexander (35 years) and Agnes Mitchell (60 years) all receiving their NODA long service awards.

The meeting closed with an appeal from Robin to all past and present members of the society to continue to support the opera and to make every effort to invite and encourage new members to join the society for next year’s show.

Enrolment night will be held on August 24 at Selkirk High School, to which anyone wishing to be part of the show will be made very welcome.
