THE EAGERLY-awaited spring exhibition of new work by Selkirk based artists is fast approaching.

This year’s event, entitled 'The Selkirk Boys' features, as the name suggests, a group of male artists based at Selkirk’s WASPS studios – John Berry, Alan Richmond, Colin Philip and Rob and Alex Hain.

Neither the two are alike in style which gives a rich and eclectic variety of work for visitors to ogle and wonder at.

John Berry has a well-established reputation as a painter and his distinctive imagery has a magical quality, and creates a world of fantastical imagination which is quirky and laced with gentle wit.

Recently, John has been devoting his attention to collage which makes his new work unique in a show which is otherwise given over to painting.

Alan Richmond is also a well-known local artist whose work is widely admired. He uses a bold gestural technique to produce images which elicit a sense of space and landscape from colourful abstract images, whilst also referring to other pictorial influences such as the weathering of paintwork on the hulls of boats.

Rob Hain’s whimsical and instantly recognisably style has made him one of Scotland’s most popular painters.

His uniquely colourful images of the architecture of Edinburgh, quirky and idiosyncratic city maps and the landscape of the Borders have a playful quality which is uniquely his own.

Colin Philip’s work draws on connections between myth and landscape, which he reflects in a style that develops his interest in the contrast between light and shadow.

Deriving influences from various sources, including literature, film and photography, he aims to produce images which can have a dream-like (or nightmarish) quality.

And, don’t miss your opportunity to see the work of an emerging star of Scottish art. Alex Hain’s intensely personal paintings reflect his interest in the importance of family and memory.

He works in a rich, highly textured and expressive style which has favoured him among critics and art-lovers as him one to watch, and his work is quickly becoming highly sought after.

The Selkirk Boys show is taking place on Saturday June 3 and 4, 10am-5pm, in the main gallery at WASPS Studios, 1 St Mary’s Mill, Level Crossing Road, Selkirk TD7.
