POLICE have confirmed that a woman driver involved in a crash yesterday has died.

The 82-year-old, who was behind the wheel of a Nissan Micra, was involved in a collision with a van near the Waterwheel cafe in Selkirk.

The beige Micra car collided with blue Mercedes van on the A708 at about 12.45 pm.

The female driver of the car was taken to the Borders General Hospital where she later died.

Around 90 minutes earlier a 43-year-old motorcyclist was seriously injured when his blue and white Suzuki collided with a black Fiat just a mile or so away, near Linglie Farm, at around 11.20 am.

He was taken to the Borders General Hospital and later transferred to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

The two female occupants of the Fiat suffered minor injuries and were taken to the Borders General Hospital but later discharged.

Sergeant Neil Inglis said: “Tragically a woman has died following the collision near Philiphaugh.

“These were two serious but unrelated incidents which occurred within a short space of time and less than two miles apart.

“I would ask any members of the public who may have witnessed these collisions or these vehicles prior to the collisions to come forward if they have not already done so.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101.
