A ONE-WAY system is being introduced around a Selkirk school following safety concerns.

The roads around Knowepark Primary regularly become gridlocked and overcrowded with parked cars during school drop off and pick up times.

Following a lengthy consultation process, roads bosses at Scottish Borders Council propose to introduce more double-yellow lines.

And they are also asking parents and residents to abide with a new voluntary one-way system.

A spokesman for the local authority told the Border Telegraph: “Concerns were raised with the council by local residents around traffic and parking associated with school run times at Knowepark Primary.

“Following a number of meetings with residents and local councillors, which have discussed a series of options, the council is proposing to introduce double yellow lines to improve visibility for drivers at junctions of Curror Street, Mavis Bank, Anderson Road and Bleachfield Road.

“A small build out is proposed for Anderson Road and during school run times the intention is to introduce a voluntary one-way system into Curror Street and out onto Anderson Road."

Despite projects to encourage more walking to school the traffic problems around Knowepark have escalated in recent years.

Local councillor Michelle Ballantyne visited many of the residents last week to spell out the planned changes.

And letters have also been sent out to the householders ahead of a formal Traffic Regulation Order being imposed.

The spokesman added: "The council has begun consultation with statutory bodies and the public will be given the opportunity to comment on the Traffic Regulation Order from mid-August.

“Any objections to the Traffic Regulation Order will be taken to the Eildon Area Forum.

“Residents are welcome to use the school car park at evenings, weekends and holidays.”
