ACCESS to the Borders has been restricted due to a flash flood, which has torn up nearly 30 metres of road surface and sent boulders crashing onto it during a sudden downpour.

The B6355 Gifford to Cranshaws road is shut at the section between Whiteadder Reservoir and Redstone Rigg, after torrential rain caused a burn to break its banks.

The force of the water sent boulders from the stream crashing onto the road and cracked the surface itself as it flooded, on Wednesday evening leaving the road unusable.

And festivalgoers have been warned to find a new route to this weekend's Audio Soup Festival which is being held at Cranshaws, near Duns.

Organisers issued a warning to festival goers to avoid the road.

They said: "Due to last night's extreme weather, part of the B6355 Gifford to Cranshaws road is damaged and the road has been closed and will remain closed all weekend. This is one of the main routes to Soup.

"The best road to Soup is taking the A1 South to Grantshouse then turn right onto the A6112 to Duns. Go as far as Preston then turn to the right on the B6365 that will take you all the way to Soup.

"This road is totally fine, the site is fine, the crew are fine, we are all cracking on and looking forward to seeing you on the field."

Scottish Borders Council say officers from SBC and East Lothian are meeting on site this morning and work continues to reopen the road as soon as possible.
