SEISMOLOGISTS have confirmed an earthquake struck the Borders this week.
The British Geological Survey recorded the quake at 5.48am on Wednesday.
The 1.1 tremor's epicentre was close to the English border at Saughtree - nine miles from Hawick.
Geologists believe the quake was caused by movement in a small fault in the Eurasian tectonic plate.
Seismologist David Galloway said said: "Hawick is probably the nearest place that anyone would have felt this, but it is not likely.
"You would have had to have been standing next to it to feel it.
"We get about 200 quakes in the UK each year, but most go unnoticed. Occasionally there is one, but not many."
This latest earthquake is one of 64 tremors which have so far been recorded across Scotland this year.
