STAFF at the M&S branch in Galashiels are flinging open their doors next month to support the world's biggest coffee morning.

For the seventh year in a row the retail giant is putting its weight behind the Macmillan Cancer Support fundraiser.

The World's Biggest Coffee Morning event takes place within the Gala Water Retail Park store on Friday, September 30.

But they will also be supporting the cause from the start of the month with 10 per cent of sales on tasty treats going to the charity.

Findlay Valler, manager at M&S Galashiels, told the Border Telegraph: “Macmillan is a charity that’s close to the hearts of many of our customers and colleagues which is why we’re determined to make this year’s event our most successful yet.

“The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning provides the perfect opportunity to get your friends and family together to enjoy a coffee, a cake and a catch-up for what is a very worthy cause.

"If you aren’t hosting your own coffee morning then we’d love to see you join us in-store on September 30 to help us raise funds.

"We will also have Macmillan-themed goods on sale throughout September, so you can still do your bit even if you only have a short amount of time to pop into store.”

On the day of the coffee morning event every customer who has an M&S Sparks Loyalty Card and has selected Macmillan as their chosen charity will be granted a double donation - from 1p to 2p - on each transaction.

From September 1 M&S shoppers will be able to enjoy a whole host of treats on sale in Foodhalls with 10 percent of each sale going to Macmillan.

Products include a Victoria Sandwich, Afternoon Tea Fairy Cakes and 13 flavours of cake and cookie mixes.

An array of limited edition home products, including a bone china mug, a set of three tea towels, a cake tin and an apron will also be available in the majority of M&S homeware departments with 10 percent of each sale going to the charity.

This year’s event comes as it is revealed that there are two and a half million people living with cancer in the UK today, a number that is set to rise to four million by 2030.

M&S has supported World’s Biggest Coffee Morning since 2010 and during this time the retailer has raised over £6 million for Macmillan. The money raised by M&S helps to support people affected by cancer as well as fund vital posts in local communities, right across the UK. Last year, 26 Macmillan professional posts were funded.

Alix Wooding from Macmillan Cancer Support said: “We want to make sure that no one has to face cancer alone.

"The support Macmillan receives from M&S is vital in enabling us to continue to support those affected by cancer, as well as those around them.

“We rely on the generosity of our supporters for more than 99 per cent of our income and coffee morning events, or popping into your local M&S store to support us, are great ways to have fun whilst raising vital funds to help people affected by cancer.

“If you can’t do it on September 30 then just pick another day or you can also support us by visiting M&S Galashiels to pick up one of the many treats on offer throughout September that will see much needed funds donated to Macmillan Cancer Support.”
