A FUN day for deaf children in the south of Scotland is set to take place near Selkirk.

Deaf children and their families in the south of Scotland are, for the first time, being invited by the National Deaf Children’s Society.

The event on Saturday, September 10 from 10am-3pm will be open to any deaf children up to 16 years old and their immediate family living in Dumfries and Galloway, the Scottish Borders, Midlothian and East Lothian.

Heather Gray, Director of the National Deaf Children’s Society in Scotland, told the Border Telegraph: “Families of deaf children in the south of Scotland can experience geographical isolation, with numbers spread across a wide rural area.

"This event is crucial in bringing them together to meet other families of deaf children and to give them a chance to find out about all the support available in a relaxed, supportive atmosphere.”

The event will feature the charity’s new deaf awareness Roadshow bus and provide an update on technology and local services available to help deaf children and their families.

Guests will have the opportunity to meet other deaf children and families, share a barbeque lunch and find out about local services and support.

They can also enjoy fun activities such as pond dipping and face painting, and explore the adventure playground, nature trails and beautiful scenery at Bowhill House.

If successful, the charity says it plans to run more family events in the area in future.

Heather Gray added: “Our family day provides an ideal opportunity for deaf children, young people and their families to come together, learn, have fun, access information and take an opportunity to talk to local professionals as well as enjoy lots of exciting activities

"We are looking forward to hosting the event for the first time in the South of Scotland this year and hope it will be a great day out for local families of deaf children.”

The event is free, but places must be booked. Families can book online at southofscotday.eventbrite.co.uk.
