A CYCLING Countess pulled into Lauder yesterday for a slice of cake.

Sophie, Countess of Wessex, is currently taking part in a 445-miles sponsored ride from Holyrood Palace to London.

Yesterday's opening leg of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Diamond Challenge saw the cyclists ride down the A68, stopping for breaks in Lauder and Jedburgh, before heading over the Carter Bar into England.

The money raised from the Diamond Challenge will enable more young people to start their Duke of Edinburgh's Award, including those from disadvantaged or vulnerable backgrounds.

Peter Westgarth, CEO of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award said: “At 60 years young the Duke of Edinburgh's Award has never been more relevant for young people in the UK.

"Over the years we’ve helped millions of young people to transform their lives through their Award experience, gaining self-belief and essential skills.”

The Countess of Wessex was delighted to support the charity in its diamond anniversary year by completing her own challenge, after witnessing first-hand the incredible impact it has has on every young life it touches.
