A TOTAL of 10 jobs have been created with this week's opening of the new Co-op store in Melrose.

Pupils from Melrose Primary School will carry out the official opening tomorrow (Thursday).

A total of £800,000 has been invested in the new High Street store, which is considerably larger than the former outlet.

And bosses state that it will see a focus on fresh, healthy foods and meal ideas, an in-store bakery and food-to-go.

Store manager Suzanne Dyer said: “We are delighted to have made such a significant investment in Melrose, opening the Co-op’s newest food store is an exciting time for the whole team. Our aim is to establish the store as a local hub and we are looking forward to serving the community."

The new store will bring a funding boost to Melrose’s community groups through the Co-op’s new Membership scheme.

Members receive a five per cent reward on purchases of own-brand products and services, with a further one per cent going local causes to make a difference in the community.

Groups set to benefit in the Melrose area include Borders Asperger and Autism Group Support and friends of Borders General Hospital.

The store has also appointed a Community Pioneer, Jackie Wilson, who will work to foster involvement in community activities, from local fundraising to working with charities, schools and voluntary organisations to contribute to local life.

Ms Dyer added: “Our return to the famous ‘clover leaf’ design logo aims to re-establish the Co-op a centre of the community and we want shoppers to know that they can become a co-owner and members of their Co-op.

"We are also giving more back to the community. Our members have an opportunity to make a difference locally simply by using their membership card when they shop with us, providing them with money back and raising much needed funding for organisations who contribute to improving local life."
