YARN Bombers have been out in force in Selkirk to give the town a festive feel.

On Sunday, 2,000 knitted baubles were hung around the town and Tuesday saw the Christmas tree get covered in the DIY decorations.

The group decided to build on its huge success last year, which saw the streets of Selkirk transformed after members turned lampposts and park benches into instant exhibits.

Kay Ross, one of the organisers told the Border Telegraph: “Last year was such a success and it brought a lot of people together. That September was the first time we had done it and everyone wanted it to continue.

“That’s when we came up with the idea of decorating the tree this year, so we spoke to the Christmas lights committee and they wanted us to do it.

“The knitting started seriously in the spring time and we had to calculate how much was needed so we had enough. It is great to bring yarn and art together to decorate the town and a lot of work has gone into it.

“We’ve had around 40 people making the decorations and we meet once a month. Some members can’t make always make it, because they are house-bound. We have had a man who used to cook all the time and he has turned to making the pom-poms!”

And the festivities will continue on Saturday with the town’s lights switch-on and concert.

Kay added: “On Saturday there will be a lot happening here. There will be the concert and Santa Claus will be coming for the kids.

“This is a community event and we have even had some help from the local primary school pupils, which is great.”

When the holiday season is over, the decorations will all be taken down, washed and stored away to see if they can be used again in the future.

Kay added: “We need to say a big thank you to the community and all the volunteers who have helped and those who will help on Sunday.

“The six men who have been going around with the ladders have all done a great job.”
