THE people of Melrose saw in the new year with a bang at their annual Hogmanay fireworks display.

Almost 2000 revellers crammed into Market Square to celebrate one of the biggest events on the town’s calendar.

They were also treated to live music from the Melrose Pipes and Drums and of course the highly anticipated pyrotechnics from the Ship Inn.

And a team of volunteer stewards helped the event run smoothly along with Police Scotland and Scottish Borders Council.

Val Miller of Melrose and District Community Council told the Border Telegraph: “It was a fantastic event, if fact I would say it was one of the best ever. The fireworks were most spectacular and we had an excellent response from volunteers.

“It is all looking positive for next year, if we can get get the same amount of volunteers helping out.

“We had a strong police presence and the Street Pastors of Galashiels really helped us. The council has also done a great job with the clean up – it looks as if nothing has happened in the town!

“We also have to give credit to Keith McDonald who sets up the fireworks display. It obviously wouldn’t happen without him.”
