A GALASHIELS primary school has been targeted by vandals for the second time in a fortnight.

Gangs of boozed-up teenagers are believed to be behind the damage to Burgh Primary School.

And authorities fear someone will be seriously injured as smashed glass is left scattered around playgrounds.

The latest attack came on Friday when more than 20 youths gathered in the school grounds.

A door panel of an outdoor classroom was kicked in and bottles were smashed during the incident.

The school janitor, for the second time since New Year, had to clean up the aftermath of the drinking den before pupils returned to class on Monday.

A spokesperson for Burgh Primary said: “The children in our school are at risk due to the dangerous debris leftover, as are the boys and girls who are drinking and putting themselves in a vulnerable situation.

“We are unclear of exact ages but the majority are underage and there was a significant amount of alcohol, given the level of broken glass in the playground.

“This situation cannot continue, someone is going to become ill or have a serious injury. “

Scottish Borders Council’s schools estates team have been made aware of the continuing problems at the Galashiels primary over the winter.

A spokesperson told us: “We are disappointed at this incident of vandalism at Burgh Primary School.

“Over the last two weekends there has been a considerable amount of broken glass left in the playground.

“This poses an unacceptable risk to pupils and staff and we’d ask anyone who witnesses any suspicious behaviour in the playground to report it to the police immediately.”

A report has been made to Police Scotland regarding the continued vandalism.

And now local officers are attempting to trace the under-age drinkers who are behind the incidents.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland told us: “We received a report of a vandalism, which took place about 6.30pm on Friday. Damage was caused to the summerhouse in the playground and a number of bottles were found smashed.

“Anyone with information which may be able to help, or who has been in the area of Burgh Primary School in recent weekends and may have seen suspicious behaviour, is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.”
