POLICE are writing to every parent in Galashiels in a bid to stamp out escalating vandalism.

The unprecedented step follows continued antisocial behaviour in and around the town.

Last month we reported of regular attacks on property at the Burgh Primary school, where yobs left the playground scattered in glass and kicked in the door panel of an outdoor classroom.

Galashiels-based Inspector Tony Hodges told the Border Telegraph: “In recent weeks, we’ve had an increase in reports of antisocial behaviour by groups of young people in the Galashiels and surrounding areas at the weekend and on an evening.

“There is a small minority of these young people whose behaviour is causing concern to local businesses and residents.

“As part of our efforts to prevent any further issues, we’re making local parents aware of this and asking them to consider discussing with their child the potential consequences of such behaviour, both in the interests of these young people and those of the community.”

Officers have revealed there were 134 more anti social incidents of across the Borders compared with last year, a 3.6 per cent rise.

They believe many of these involve youths in Galashiels and in Hawick.

Members of Galashiels Community Council also voiced their concerns at the growing problem last week.

Community councillor and former police officer John Hazle told Galashiels Academy headteacher Kevin Ryalls he was concerned about pupils’ behaviour in the town centre at lunchtimes.

He said: “The behaviour of some of the kids at lunchtime is disgusting. The way some of them drop litter is a disgrace. Another issue is road safety. It is a disaster waiting to happen.”

Mr Ryalls told the meeting: “We have spoken to a few youngsters and we try and encourage them to be respectful. It’s certainly something we’ll mention again. If people see it and they tell us, we can deal with it.”
