POLICE in the Borders have made an appeal to track down the man who stole a four-figure sum from a Galashiels post office.

A member of staff also sustained a "serious head injury" during the attack, which took place between 7.30am and 7.45am yesterday morning (Sunday, February 12) in Balmoral Place.

And Detective Constable Andrew Hope, Borders CID, has been at the shop to ask anyone with information to come forward.

A 61-year-old male customer who came into the shop as the man was being attacked, intervened. However, the suspect managed to get away but not before stealing his wallet and mobile phone.

The suspect is described as white, in his early 20s, wearing black trousers, a black top, light pink trainers and a black scarf covering his face.

He was also carrying a black backpack which may have had pink markings thereon.

The robbery comes just days after a post office in Innerleithen was targeted.

A five-figure sum was stolen along with a large quantity of cigarettes.

Detective Constable Andrew Hope said: "At the moment there is nothing to say that the Innerleithen incident is linked, but we can't rule anything out.

"This is very unusual for Galashiels."
