A HOME shopping driver from Galashiels has been honoured after battling through a snowstorm for two hours ON FOOT to deliver a pensioner's groceries.

Andrew Parr was honoured with Service to our Customers Award by his bosses at Asda this week.

Andrew, who has only worked as an Asda driver for six months, was faced with the dilemma after severe snow and blizzards blocked his route in the rural Borders.

After calling the 85-year-old customer, who said she had no food in the house, Andrew took the decision to park up his van and continue the journey on foot.

For two hours he battled through the blizzard carrying the lady's shopping bags.

Andrew, who collected his award this week, told the Border Telegraph: “I thought I was in trouble when my manager Lynne called me in to tell me I’d won.

"I didn’t think I had done anything special, it was either cancel the customer’s shopping or continue on and I’d hope if I was in that situation someone would help me.

“As ex-military, the challenge of the snow wasn’t an issue for me, I just pushed through.”

Andrew's heroics were noticed by Galashiels store manager Lynne Taylor.

And she put him forward for the company award.

Lynne said: “When Head Office asked us for nominations, Andrew immediately sprung to mind.

"He used his initiative and put customer needs before his own.

"We are extremely proud of his achievements within his short time at the store.”

Andrew was presented with his award by Senior Vice President Hayley Tatum as well as President and CEO Sean Clarke (pictured) at a celebration with Asda colleagues.
