BIGGAR is set to pack a punch this March, as a new theatre production comes to the town.

Performed by the team at Arts Enigma, “The Lynching: The Last Rounds of Benny Lynch” by Paul Moore showcases the life of of Boxing legend Benny Lynch.

Set in 1935, the show focuses on the Florence Street flyweight as he conquers the world, rising from Gorbals slum to the grandiose glamour.

The production explores the mindset of this Gorbals boy in this poignant, pulling-no-punches journey of a true “legend” as he battles with his demons, both in and out of the ring.

Benny won the Scottish flyweight boxing title in 1934 and went on to win the British, European and world flyweight titles.

But by 1938, his other battle against alcoholism meant that he could no longer make the weight for the flyweight division and his boxing license was eventually withheld. Lynch died at the age of 33 in 1946.

Jenni Featherstone from the Biggar Corn Exchange Ltd told us: "The production has been causing some interest within the Boxing community and I have been told that this has even attracted national coverage with a story in the Daily Record. We're urging anyone interested to book now to avoid disappointment."

The show will be held at the Biggar Corn Exchange on Friday, March 17 at 7.30pm.

Tickets cost £12 (£10 concessions) and can be reserved only. Payment can be made on the door.
