A COUNCILLOR has urged Innerleithen residents to support calls for a permanent Post Office service in the town.

Councillor Graham Garvie backed the talks by community councillors at the recent Innerleithen Community Council meeting on Monday, March 6.

Following the closure of the Post Office concession within the DayMart Newsagents in the town last month, a weekly mobile service operates on Friday mornings outside St James’ Church between 9.30am and 1.00pm.

Speaking at the meeting, Councillor Garvie stated: “We need as many people as possible to support this. If the community doesn’t rise up, we’ll lose our chance of a permanent Post Office in the town.”

Chairman of Innerleithen Community Council Marshall Douglas echoed Councillor Garvie’s comments: “As many people as possible need to get involved and write to the Post Office to express their opinions.” during this consultation period.

“A Facebook page has also been set up to campaign to restore a full time service to the town.”

Last month we reported that Andrew Caldwell of Caldwell’s Ices expressed interest in picking up the service, but discussions are still known to be in the early stages with the Post Office.

The consultation period closes on Friday, March 24. Residents can send their views by contacting the Post Office by visiting www.postofficeviews.com, emailing comments@postoffice.co.uk or calling 03457 22 33 44.
