A TEMPORARY weight limit is set to be placed on a Melrose bridge ahead of planned repair works later this year.
The 26-tonne weight limit, which will only affect the heaviest vehicles will be imposed on the Lowood Bridge from Monday, March 20 on the 250-year-old Grade B listed structure.
The weight limit is a precautionary measure designed to reduce the stresses on the bridge while preparations for the repair works are undertaken.
Last year, an inspection of the bridge revealed some deterioration which requires the repair and strengthening works.
Temporary signs will be in place to advise affected drivers of the limit and of the alternative route via the A6091, A7 through Galashiels and B6374.
SBC expect the repair and strengthening works to take place during late summer or autumn this year.
The works are part of a number of major repairs to bridges taking place in 2017/18. The £2million programme of works by SBC include Clackmae Bridge near Earlston, Bowanhill Bridge near Teviothead and Bowden Church Bridge.
An additional £385,000 will also be spent in 2018/19 to complete the Lowood Bridge repairs.
A Scottish Borders Council spokesperson said: “The removal of the heaviest vehicles from Lowood Bridge is a precaution, with the bridge safe to use for remaining traffic.
“Once the repairs are completed, the intention is to remove the weight restriction.
“The increased investment in bridge repairs across the Borders will ensure these vital structures which link up our road network can be used for years to come.”
