A GALASHIELS park has sustained "significant damage" following a suspicions fire.

The incident happened in Scott Park at around 1am this morning (Wednesday).

A plastic bin had been set alight before the flames spread to the swing set and rubber ground cover.

As a result the park sustained significant damage and inquiries are ongoing to trace those responsible.

In particular, officers are keen to trace two youths who were seen running off from the area at the time the fire broke out.

And anyone with information is asked to come forward.

Inspector Tony Hodges from Galashiels Police Station said: "The Scott Park is popular for dog walkers and families and this mindless act of destruction means that the bin will be out of use until it can be repaired.

"We are pursuing various local lines of inquiry to trace the culprits and would urge anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area, or who has information relevant to this investigation, to contact police immediately."

Those with information can contact Police Scotland on 101 or alternatively, the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
