A MOTORCYCLIST could face court after cops clocked the biker travelling at 112mph on the A7 near Hawick.

It happened during the first weekend of Police Scotland's Motorcycle Safety campaign in the Borders.

Local Road Policing officers were on patrol on Saturday and Sunday across key routes where collisions have previously taken place, to encourage safe riding and deal with any riders who put themselves in danger through irresponsible and illegal driving behaviour.

Using both marked and unmarked cars, a number of speed checks were carried out, and police say one rider was detected riding at almost twice the speed limit.

Inspector Richard Latto of the Lothians and Scottish Borders Road Policing Unit said: "The first weekend of sunny weather this year saw an increase in the number of motorcycles visiting the Borders, but fortunately not an increase in those driving recklessly.

"However, one motorcyclist was detected riding at 112mph, almost twice the speed limit on the A7 north of Hawick - they will now be reported to the Procurator Fiscal where the penalties could include disqualification from driving and a fine.

"Further weekends of action are planned, and together with our colleagues in the Safety Camera Unit, local Road Policing officers will continue to patrol popular biking routes over the coming months to ensure motorcyclists are able to enjoy our wonderful countryside whilst riding responsibly."
