ALTHOUGH Twickenham may not hold happy memories for Scots rugby fans after the recent Calcutta Cup demolition, England’s national stadium last week became a theatre of dreams for young Lindsay Maguire from Darnick.
For the 18-year-old winger was in the Edinburgh University Ladies side which beat Northumbria Ladies 48-5 at the famous venue on Thursday to win the British Universities and College Sports (BUCS) North League Championship final.
“It was a great thrill to play at Twickenham and winning the match was extra special,” said Lindsay whose love of rugby was nurtured at Earlston High School.
Lindsay, who has played tennis and netball at district level, is studying for a degree in chemistry and only signed up for rugby training at Edinburgh University in September last year.
Meanwhile, Lindsay’s big sister and Earlston High alumna Erin, 21, is also making her mark on the sport, having recently been awarded her Colour for Women’s Rugby at Dundee University from where she is due to graduate with a degree in neuroscience in June.
Also in the winning line-up at Twickenham on Thursday was 19-year-old centre Lisa Thomson from Hawick who is studying applied sports science at Edinburgh University and also plays for Melrose Ladies Rugby.
