THE convenor of the Scottish Borders Chamber of Commerce says it would be a "great boost for tourism" if hotel giant Travelodge brings a hotel to Galashiels.

Jack Clark's comments come after the chain announced it is searching for 21 new sites across Scotland and is hoping to become the town's first branded accommodation.

The group is also looking at a range of other sites as part of the project which could create around 400 new jobs.

Mr Clark told the Border Telegraph: "First of all we were very pleased to hear these plans, because we have waited a long time in this area.

"It will benefit businesses and provide a place to stay in the town.

"It would be a great boost for tourism. Certainly one of the biggest problems we have had in terms of tourism, is that accommodation has not been adequate for bus parties.

"It is hoped that the existing rating system is revised to encourage businesses like this to the area.

"The hospitality industry has been under a lot of pressure with business rates and it is hoped a remedy can be found."

Mike Gray, Chairman Energise Galashiels Trust added: "Energise Galashiels welcomes the news that a  major hotel operator is interested in investing in the town.

"Following on from the decision to site the Great Tapestry of Scotland in the town centre, we expect to see more investment / development interest arise in the months ahead, all of which will contribute to regenerating Galashiels."
