WORK is underway to upgrade an outdated ICT network infrastructure for council services in the Borders.

After winning a multi-million-pound contract to provide its services, Telecoms firm Commsworld are working alongside with Scottish Borders Council to carry out the updates

The deal will not only see Schools, Libraries and Council buildings gain much faster, more resilient connections, but local businesses are also set to benefit from the improvements.

Commsworld is already underway 'unbundling' exchanges at Galashiels and Hawick, and as a result of the works, it will enable multiple Telecoms operators to use connections from the telephone exchange to customer buildings.

The investment will allow more cost effective, better performing and faster internet connection speeds across the Scottish Borders.

This major change is something Commsworld Commercial Director, and Borders native, Andy Arkle believes will have long-term outcomes for the area.

He said: “This project is a genuine game-changer for the Scottish Borders and will finally see the network infrastructure able to compete with UK city networks.

“Commsworld has already delivered a similar project in Edinburgh for businesses and the City of Edinburgh Council, delivering fantastic benefits across the city.”

Following the announcement in March 2016, the 13-year contract will provide SBC with vastly updated technology to deliver its customer services.

The deal struck between the firm and council, which is expected to inject more than £100m into the local economy, will establish a Scottish ICT Delivery Centre of Excellence within the Borders to support its growing client base.
