MOTORISTS in Peebles can expect disruption as the High Street and Eastgate close for resurfacing.

But roads bosses at Scottish Borders Council are imposing only evening and night-time closures in a bid to keep the main streets functioning during the works.

The High Street will be shut from Monday, April 17, each day between 6pm and 2am until Friday morning (April 21).

The Eastgate will shut during the same hours from Sunday, April 23 to the Thursday morning.

The resurfacing is part of a £135,000 investment in Peebles roads by the local authority.

A council spokesperson told the Peeblesshire News: “We are aware these road improvement works will cause some disruption to local people.

“However, the council has tried to alleviate this by carrying out the resurfacing in evenings and putting in place a number of other measures, including advanced warning signs to advise local people of the works and diversions.

“Residents and businesses are thanked in advanced for their patience and co-operation during the works, which will result in both roads being greatly improved for drivers and pedestrians.”

Ahead of the resurfacing works, local authority teams will carry out improvements to the Northgate pedestrian crossing.

They will also introduce a bus build-out area on the High Street, outside The County Hotel, which will have the added benefit of creating more parking spaces.

The first phase of the closure will see the High Street resurfaced from the pedestrian crossing to TSB bank, with the Eastgate and Northgate remaining open as normal.

The second phase will see the Eastgate shut from the Green Tree Hotel to the pedestrian crossing, during which the Northgate and Tweed Green will become two-way during this closure to allow access to the Gytes, Walkershaugh and Bridgegate.

The Eastgate closure will see the High Street remain open for access only from the roundabout at the Old Parish Church to the pedestrian crossing, with a temporary turning area created on the High Street outside the Chamber Institute.

Both phases will see parking restrictions in place on a number of streets to help maintain traffic flow on the diversion route.

Only evening bus services will be affected, with alternative bus stops located on the A703 Edinburgh Road and A72 Innerleithen Road.

The works won't affect the Beltane Festival’s Introduction Night on Friday, April 28.
