A MURDER enquiry has been launched after a 70-year-old woman died following an incident at a Melrose sheltered housing complex.

Police were called to an address at Priorwood Court at around 4.45pm on Sunday, April 9, following a report of concern for a woman.

She was taken to Borders General Hospital for treatment, but passed away today (Tuesday, April 18).

The incident is being treated as a murder enquiry and a report has been sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

A 69-year-old man appeared at Selkirk Sheriff Court in connection with the incident on Tuesday, April 11, where he was remanded in custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Stephen Healy of Lothians and Scottish Borders CID said: “This is a tragic set of circumstances, and our thoughts are with the lady’s family at this distressing time.

“This is being treated as an isolated incident and we are not looking for anyone else in connection to our enquiries.

“Our officers are continuing to support her family and we want to thank the local community for their support.
