FARMER Russell Mackay can't wait to saddle up for the summer festivals.
The Melrosian Elect has spent the past three months learning to ride.
Following tonight's official Appointment in a packed Melrose Square, the 21-year-old admitted he is now ready to take the reins.
Russell told us: "I've really enjoyed learning to ride and I'm looking forward to representing Melrose at Mosspaul in three weeks.
"I know how much the Festival means to the people of Melrose and it is an honour to be named as Melrosian."
Glorious sunshine greeted this year's Principals.
Festival chairman Michael Crawford unveiled this year's Festival Queen as 12-year-old Ilona Cockburn.
The Primary 7 pupil from Darnick was only told of her appointment the previous day.
Ilona said: "I was really shocked when they said I was to be the Queen."
For all the reaction and colour from this year's Appointment Night, don't miss next week's Border Telegraph.
