PEEBLES Golf Club’s 125th anniversary celebrations began in earnest last weekend at Peebles Hydro.

Members swapped the golf ball for the ballroom, helping to raise a fantastic total of £3,750 for charity partners, The Fragile X Society.

Chairman of The Fragile X Society Craig McDonald, a Peebles Golf Club member, was delighted with the support from the club.

He told us: "On behalf of The Fragile X Society, which supports families affected by fragile X and helps educate the public in raising awareness of the syndrome, I would like to thank the club for choosing us as their charity partner.

"The Ball was a wonderful event and we were amazed by the amount of money raised on the night. It’s great that the club does so much work in the community and we are indebted to the generosity of all the members involved who made it such a special night.”

With a packed room of nearly 160 guests, the Anniversary Ball proved to be a roaring success, supported by a fantastic performance by the Back Green Band, superbly fronted by lead vocalist Evan Balfour.

A range of top prizes were won in the fundraising raffle, including tickets for the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Men’s and Ladies Opens, four-balls at Ladybank and Dalmahoy and spa treatments at Stobo Castle, before auctioneer Mark Thomson got the cash flowing in the live auction, as generous bids were made for a framed and signed pin flag from world number one golfer Dustin Johnson, a dining experience from Osso executive chef Ally McGrath and a Holland and Sherry suit.

Event organiser and club vice-captain Ross Duncan added: “It was great to get such a good turnout to mark this historic year in the club’s history and we had a fantastic atmosphere on the night.

"We were delighted to support The Fragile X Society given Craig and his family’s involvement in the charity and hopefully our fundraising efforts will make a difference in helping their work and increasing awareness locally.”
