STAFF from two Peebles schools have been awarded for their acts of bravery at a ceremony in the town.

Assistant Chief Constable Wayne Mawson attended an assembly at Priorsford Primary School in Peebles yesterday afternoon (Thursday, May 11) to present awards from the Royal Humane Society.

Priorsford Head Teacher, Sandra Macgregor, and Head of Peebles High School, Campbell Wilson, held the event to highlight the importance of citizenship and the values of caring and community mindedness.

The bravery of two of their staff members and a member of the public was formally recognised and they were each presented with an award from the Royal Humane Society.

Megan Murphy and Alan Stewart provided support to casualties following a fatal road accident on the A703 between Peebles and Eddleston in February 2016.

The immediate action, compassion and humanity displayed by both individuals was exceptional and without doubt provided comfort to all those involved during a traumatic time.

Keith Russell was recognised for his bravery during a separate incident in December 2015 when he helped to save the life of a woman who had fallen into the River Lyne in West Linton.

The courageous actions of Keith and two other men in entering the water, rescuing the woman and quickly administering first aid undeniably contributed to her survival.
