DRIVERS are crossing onto the wrong side of Peebles High Street to avoid the obstruction caused by an “ill-considered” bus build-out, it has been claimed.

Last week’s Community Council meeting heard that issues such as traffic and safety would be monitored as a result.

Community councillor Leslie Turnbull, who first raised his concerns in April, told the meeting: “Issues continue to be raised that this new bus stop has been ill-considered and introduced without full consultation with the community council and other parties.

“Since construction of this new bus stop, residents have seen a number of incidents that confirm their fears regarding road safety.

“Vehicles have been seen to drive on the opposite side of the road, in contravention of the keep left sign, to avoid obstruction.

“Delivery vehicles have been seen parked over the new bus stop preventing or reducing access to it by people with mobility issues or with pushchairs and such like. And tour buses have also been seen to stop there, out of necessity, for a few minutes at a time.”

“We are happy to receive all comments including those from bus users who may find the new set up helps them access the buses more easily.
