CROWDS gathered in Galashiels this evening to welcome the Selkirk Standard Bearer to the town for Spurs Night.

Braw Lad Greg Robertson and Braw Lass Amy Thomson were on hand to greet Standard Bearer Kieran Riddell in the curtain-raiser for a summer of festivities.

In his announcement in Cornmill Square, President of the Braw Lads' Gathering, David Romanis, said: "Standard Bearer Riddell and visitors from Selkirk, it is indeed my privilege and pleasure to welcome you here tonight to Galashiels."

Braw Lad Greg Robertson added: "May I on behalf of my Braw Lass and my attendants welcome Standard Bearer Riddell into our town on this special night.

"It's great to see so many followers and members of the public supporting us on this historic evening.

"Can I take this opportunity to wish you all the best for a safe and enjoyable Common Riding. I hope this summer makes special memories for all of us."

Standard Bearer Kieran Riddell said the event was the "perfect way" to bring the two towns even closer together.

He said: "First I would like to thank the Braw Lads' executive for all the hard work that goes into organising this event.

"Both of our towns have had such strong connections for many years, whether it be in sport or support. Spurs Night is the perfect way in which to seal the bond held in such high esteem.

"In Amy and Greg, you have two excellent ambassadors for your town. I would like to congratulate them and wish them every success in carrying out their duties."
