PUPILS from Galashiels and Selkirk have been Sounding Out the region's history in a bid to bring ballads and myths of the Borders to life.

The primary students, who are aged between eight and 10, were joined by fellow pupils from schools in Ettrick and Yarrow for the project which is part of the Borders Heritage Festival.

Workshops at Abbotsford Trust, Aikwood Tower and Bowhill House took place with composer Suzanne Parry, Joanna Burns of the Scottish Chambers Orchestra, and local writer Jules Horne.

The pupils explored the history, stories, myths and people connected with the historical sites.

And they used their newly-found knowledge to create a Song Cycle of approximately 15 minutes, which will be played by SCO musicians.

Vicki Steel from Aikwood Tower said: “The children really engaged with the history of Aikwood and enjoyed hearing some of the many fantastic stories and legends surrounding the building.

“This year celebrates 500 years since King James V granted the lands of Aikwood – the feu deposition - to the Scott family and so during this special year for us, we’re very excited and proud to be taking part in the 2017 Heritage Festival.”

The Song Cycle will be rehearsed and performed at afternoon events and an evening performance during the Borders Heritage Festival in September.

The festival’s theme for 2017 is Where People, Place and Myth Meet.

The event has brought music and history together producing a very interesting, unique and creative learning experience for the children.
