THE 30p charge on public toilets is being rolled out this month.

Scottish Borders Council are midway through installing the new systems on 27 units, as agreed by councillors back in January.

Last week, several units around the the region were fitted with the coin machines and bosses hope to complete the job by the end of this month.

Once installed, the units will automatically begin charging, aside from the facilities in Galashiels Transport Interchange and Common Haugh in Hawick which are slightly different systems and are not charging yet.

A spokesperson for the local authority told the Border Telegraph: “Charging units are being installed throughout June, with charging starting immediately after the unit is in place.

“Signage will be in place to advise users of the new arrangement.”
