ALMOST 100 athletes headed to the hills last Saturday to take part in a challenging local run.

Gala Harriers’ Eildon Hill Race saw runners tackle the local landmark with Edinburgh AC athlete Gavin Bryson, who comes from Lauder, first home in a time of 35.58.

First female athlete to cross the line was Gala Harrier Kirsty Wilson (43.28), with clubmate Gillian Duncan first W40 athlete in a time of 52.39.

First U20 male home was Peter Buckley in 39.58, with Shettleston Harrier Peter Mackie winning in the M40 category in a time of 41.06.

Gala Harrier Bob Johnson was triumphant in the M50 category (45.08), and Caroline Tyser from Norham Running Club won the W50 category in a time of 57.30.

Deeside Runner Roger Coombs was first in the M60 category (47.56), and Patricia Affleck (unattached) won the W60 category (57.02). M70 runner Douglas Milligan from Solway was first home in his age category in 52.24.

Gary Trewartha was the first local athlete home (42.23), with first Gala Harrier being Jamie McGowan in a time of 42.31.

Gala Harriers also won the team award with four of their male athletes recording the fastest combined times.

Race winners were presented with their prizes by George Meikle who won the race 10 years running from 1961 onwards.

The race has increased in popularity with runners travelling from further afield to compete in the scenic local run.
