CHAIRMAN of the St Ronan’s Border Games, Keith Belleville has announced his retirement from the role.

The news follows the end of another successful games week which ended last weekend in Innerleithen.

Keith, who has served in the role since 2013, and previously from 2003-2007, can serve for five consecutive years and then must retire, according to the constitution of the games.

In addition to the chairman’s role, Keith has also acted as President of the Committee, presiding over all ceremonial functions.

Prior to the re-organisation of local government in 1974/75, the President’s role was undertaken by the Provost of the Burgh.

Speaking about leaving the role, Keith said: “I have now served as chairman for two terms of five years and felt that the time was right straight after Games Week to step down and give a new chairman time to settle into the role. Our annual public meeting is not until February/March and much of the organisation of the festival takes place over the winter.

“I still intend to be involved in the work of the committee and will continue to work closely with secretary Stewart Wilson going forward.

“To have been chairman of an institution such as the Games has been a real honour, but one that I simply couldn’t have undertaken without the help and support of my wife Caroline, children Emma and James and my parents.

“They have given me every encouragement as well as tremendous practical support and understanding during both of my chairmanships.”

Looking back on his final games week as chairman, he added: “Our Principals, led by Standard Bearer Liam Card, his Lass Sally Brown, Dux Boy Drew Lobb and Dux Girl Anna Leckie, were a real credit to themselves, their families and the whole town.

“Liam has been a very popular choice as Standard Bearer and carried out his duties with real pride and passion – it was a joy to see. Sally has been a fantastic Lass and got into the spirit of all of our events.

“My good friend, long-serving treasurer Norman Scott was our Principal Guest and it was a particular pleasure for me to have Norman by my side in this roll during my last year as chairman.”

His departure leaves an important vacancy to be filled, those interested in taking up the role can email stronansgames@gmail.com
