TWEED Valley Mountain Rescue team was called to the top of the Eildons on Sunday night after reports of red distress flares.
An off-duty police officer who had reported the flares found a fragment of casing near a trig point.
After a call out at around 9.40pm, a team member also found two trigger threads and more fragments.
Following a four-hour search, the team of 11, plus two dog handlers, were stood down at 2am.
