Property owners are being warned not to leave windows on the latch after thieves broke into a business premises in Hawick High Street overnight, stealing a cash register and two-figure sum of money.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the break-in, which took place between 9.30pm last night (Tuesday, October 3) and 8.50 this morning.

The culprits forced entry through a rear window before entering the main restaurant area.

Inquiries are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact police.

Detective Constable Elizabeth Miller of Galashiels CID said: “A window was open on a latch. Breaks-in such as this put a huge amount of strain on business owners and we are eager to trace those responsible.

“I would ask that all property owners are vigilant and maintain a high level of personal security, ensuring all doors and windows are closed and locked when the building is unoccupied and money is stored securely.”
