VANDALS have caused misery for users of Galashiels Swimming Pool, forcing it to close until further notice.

An external window was smashed at the Livingstone Place facility over the weekend. As a result, glass from the broken window has gone into the pool.

To ensure all the glass is removed the pool needs to be drained, cleaned and refilled.

The closure will have a knock-on affect for swimmers, with the parts of the pool swimming programme cancelled or moved to another facility. Sessions for toddlers, over-50s, children’s swimming lessons, disability swimming, adult lessons, adult fitness classes and birthday parties have all been affected.

Ben Lamb, Live Borders facilities manager, said: “It is incredibly disappointing that the actions of a few individuals have had such a negative impact for so many people. The timing is incredibly frustrating for all those people who hoped to make use of Galashiels Swimming Pool over the October holiday.

“The pool will be closed until further notice which could extend into next week. The non-pool activities will still be taking place including Spin, Kettlebells and Aerobics.

“We greatly appreciated the messages of support we have already received from the local community and their understanding as this repair work takes place.

“Our staff have worked hard to try to accommodate swimmers at Selkirk Swimming Pool with opening hours extended to help meet demand. We’re encouraging customers to check our social media channels and website for details and updates at www.liveborders.org.uk.”

Selkirk Swimming Pool will open on Tuesday from 7.15am - 8am for early morning swimming, and again from 7pm – 8.30pm for late night swimming, on Wednesday from 7.15am – 10.30am for early morning swimming/public/lane swimming and from 7.30pm – 8.30pm for the Triathlon Club, plus on Friday from 7.15am to 1pm for early morning swimming /public/lane swimming.

The incident has been reported to the police and anyone with information is encouraged to contact Police Scotland on 101 with any details.
