ONE of the Borders’ oldest residents has celebrated her 105th birthday.

Around 40 people gathered at Galashiels Nursing Home last Tuesday to mark the occasion with Flora Allam.

And they were treated to a buffet which included champagne and cake as well as a performance by one of Flora’s favourite groups, the Galashiels Golden Girls.

Also joining in with the celebrations was the Deputy Lord-Lieutenant of Roxburgh, Ettrick and Lauderdale, Anne Hogarth.

Flora has had a busy life since she was born in 1912, which has seen her live through two world wars and witness major technological changes.

She was born and brought up in Glasgow, where she lived with her family.

It was there that she married her husband Dick, who was a professional photographer.

The pair then relocated to London to begin a photography business and Flora lent a hand in the shop.

When Dick died 42 years ago, Flora returned to Scotland, this time heading for the Borders to live with her sister Ada Cowie in St Boswells.

Ada sadly died around 10 years ago, but Flora stayed in the village, moving in with her niece Sheila Lindores.

She then moved into Galashiels Nursing Home in Kirkbrae when she was 103.

And staff are delighted to have her there.

A spokesperson from the home told us: “It was an absolutely fabulous event. Everyone enjoyed it.

“Flora was surrounded by her family and friends, as well as other residents.

“We were pleased to see the Deputy Lord-Lieutenant come down – after the Lord-Lieutenant was unavailable – and the Galashiels Golden Girls.

“Flora also received her telegram from the Queen, which was great.

“Everyone really enjoyed themselves.”
