WINDS of 60 miles per hour have been recorded in the Scottish Borders, as ex-hurricane Ophelia makes landfall across the country.

Meanwhile a yellow warning for wind remains in place across the region until 3pm this afternoon (Tuesday, October 17).

The Met Office have said that the weather warning covers the Lothains and the Borders, plus Fife and eastern parts of the Forth Valley and Lanarkshire.

Over the past few hours, Charterhall in Berwickshire has recorded wind speeds of 60mph.

Across Scotland, the highest recorded wind gusts in the last few hours are; Dundrennan, near Kirkcudbright with 67mph, Prestwick in Ayrshire with 65mph, Salsburgh in Lanarkshire with 60mph, Gogarbank, to the west of Edinburgh with 58mph and Leuchars in Fife with 56mph. 

Looking ahead, the Met Office have added that winds will gradually ease through today and it’ll be a very much improved weather situation over the next couple of days.

  • No issues reported on the network at present
  • Erskine Bridge currently closed to high sided vehicles
  • Tay Bridge currently closed to high sided vehicles
  • Forth Road Bridge is currently only open to buses.

LATEST ON SCOTLAND'S RAIL SERVICES

  • The Borders Railway service from Edinburgh, which was due to arrive at Tweedbank at 10.50am has been cancelled. All other services are operational for now. Visit scotrail.co.uk for further updates.
  • Services are currently suspended in Fife due to a NR rail head treatment train having struck a tree in the Markinch area. Recovery of the damaged vehicles by NR currently underway. This is affecting services into/out of Edinburgh from Fife, Dundee and Aberdeen. No alternative transport is available at this time.
  • Services between Inverness and Aberdeen subject to delay and revision due to over running engineering works.
  • Caledonian Sleeper services from last night were either cancelled or terminated early due to electric overhead lines at Lockerbie on the West coast main line being down last night. Repairs carried out overnight and WCML re-opened.
  • Both East and West Coast main line services are operational.
