LESS than 48 hours after the meeting hut at a community woodland in the Borders was torched, a neighbouring toilet cabin has also been devastated by fire.

The Border Telegraph revealed yesterday how volunteers at Wooplaw Community Woodland near Blainslie had been left heartbroken by the destruction of the hut during Monday into Tuesday.

The building had been designed and built by visionary Tim Stead, who was behind the creation of the UK's first community woodland in 1987.

Police visited the 20 hectare forest on Tuesday as they began investigations.

And officers issued an appeal through the media for help to catch the culprits.

But yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon the thug (or thugs) returned and set alight a neighbouring toilet building.

David Donnelly, from the voluntary group who help manage Wooplaw, told us: "I went back to the woods yesterday and found the toilet has now been destroyed by fire as well.

"I have no idea what these people are trying to prove."

Over the past 30 years thousands of trees have been planted by volunteers at Wooplaw as well as trails, wildlife ponds and additional sculptures being created.

The original meeting huts had remained popular with youth and community groups for learning about, and taking advantage of, the outdoors.

Anyone with information about the fires can call Police Scotland on 101 quoting reference 1338 of Tuesday, October 17.
