SUPPORTERS of an extension of the Borders Railway were handed a significant boost this week, after Campaign for Borders Rail were given mandate to press ahead with their cause.

In front of a bustling Heart of Hawick on Saturday, members unanimously supported the campaign's push for the Borders Railway’s Edinburgh-Tweedbank route extended into Hawick and Carlisle.

A panel of four guests faced questions from the membership before the vote, with each putting forward the case for what they believe will bring vast benefits to both sides of the Border.

Watson McAteer and Colin Glover, Provost of Hawick and Carlisle City Council Leader respectively, argued that the extension would provide an invaluable economic boost to both local economies.

Mr Glover said: “We must reiterate the importance of improved communications between Carlisle and the Scottish Borders. A new link would provide better opportunities for all communities served, including adding appeal to Carlisle as a destination to for business and leisure.”

Mr McAteer added: “An extended railway would bring benefits to the community in Hawick, and provide a catalyst for economic growth.”

It’s been estimated that over 2.6 million journeys have been made on the exiting Borders Railway line since it’s opening in 2015, with the campaign keen to see plans move forward for an extension by the time the Scottish Government backed transport study commences in the New Year.

Fellow top table guests MSP Rachel Hamilton and Alex Hynds, ScotRail Alliance's managing director, both put their weight behind the campaign to take the tracks to Carlisle.

Simon Walton, who was elected for a second stint as Chair of the Campaign for Borders Rail during the meeting, believes that everything is now in the hands of the campaigners.

He said: “This will be a pivotal year for the campaign.

"With the Scottish Government backed transport survey expected soon, it’s absolutely crucial that we are methodical in our response.

“The recommendations are by no means assured to positive towards the development of the railway.

“However, I must praise the efforts of our campaigners – who recently raised paid-up membership to an all-time high over 1000.

“The weight of expectation is now firmly on our shoulders, and remaining focused, committed and confident are the keys to seeing our ultimate goal achieved.”
