A STREET in central Kelso will reopen this evening following emergency building work.

Roxburgh Street was closed off almost two months ago due to a dangerous building.

A pedestrian route through the street was opened last month.

But vehicles were still prohibited from entering or exiting Kelso town centre through the narrow road.

A structural engineer inspected the site yesterday and deemed the building stable enough to allow scaffolding to be removed and vehicles to return.

A spokesman for Scottish Borders Council said: "Roxburgh Street will reopen to traffic this evening after progress was made on repairing a privately owned dangerous building.

"Once Roxburgh Street has reopened, the one way order on Union Street will be restored and traffic will return to normal.

"Scaffolding will remain in place on the site to allow contractors to complete the repairs, which are expected to be concluded before Christmas.

"All local shops, businesses and residents are thanked for their patience during the Roxburgh Street closure."

An exact time for the reopening has yet to be announced.
