PEEBLES is preparing for one of the biggest nights of the winter this evening.

Tonight (Thursday, December 7), Peebles will host its annual Christmas lights switch on and market in the High Street.

Like previous years, there will be a variety of stalls in the centre of Peebles, each offering a selection of items ideal for that special gift.

There will be handmade bags, bouquets made out of sweets and many more unique items.

The all-important switch on will be carried out by Santa and this year’s Beltane Queen, Emily Carrick-Anderson, at 7.30pm.

David Elder, from Peebles Christmas Lights Association said: “This year we are having a change about of things and Radio Borders are bringing their Outside Broadcast Unit.

“The switch on will take place from the stage, which will be located near the Tourist Information Office.

“Radio Borders will be live throughout the evening from 5pm, with the market and funfair open for business at 6pm.”

The Stardust Musical Theatre will also perform on the night, along with Peebles Pipe Band and Silver Band.

David added: “The market stalls sold out months in advance, and will be selling everything from from mulled wine to handmade goods and jewellery.

“Forsyths of Peebles will be serving up their burgers and of course, our very own Peebles 2018 Calendar will be on sale.

“The money from the sales of the calendars goes towards the upkeep and replenishment of the lights each year.

“Plus, retailers in the area will be open for longer, with the opportunity for some late night shopping along the High Street, Old Town, the Northgate and the Eastgate.

“There’s lots of fun for all the family, do come along for a great night.”
Anne Snoddy, secretary of Peebles Christmas Lights Association, added:

“Work on the Christmas lights goes on throughout the year with the committee of Peebles Christmas Lights Association fundraising, repairing and upgrading lights and frames, and planning the Switch On Night.

“We are indebted to Stobo Castle Health Spa for sponsoring us, and grateful to everyone who helps us in any way, especially the volunteers who come out on weekday evenings and early Sunday mornings to put up the lights.”

ROAD CLOSURES:
