GALASHIELS shoppers have donated thousands of items for those in need this Christmas.
Customers at Tesco, on Paton Street, were asked to donate long-life items as part of their usual shop, with Tesco topping up the value by 20 per cent. A total of 3,056 items were handed over.
The food will go to two food charities, FareShare and The Trussell Trust.
Foodbanks in The Trussell Trust’s network give emergency food parcels to people referred because they cannot afford to feed themselves and their families.
FareShare distributes food to charities who provide meals for vulnerable groups such as isolated older people and those in homeless shelters.
