COMMUNITY leaders in Galashiels are hoping to run a credit union from the Focus Centre – should their bid for a community asset transfer go through.

As reported in the Border Telegraph last month, volunteers at the Livingstone Place facility are in the process of striking up a deal with Scottish Borders Council and Live Borders to take over the centre and run it independently.

And if approved, they hope to offer the financial service, which would allow locals to borrow money from pooled deposits at low interest rates.

Judith Cleghorn, chair of the Focus Centre’s committee said: “We really want to make the centre a great facility for the town.

"It will take a lot of work if the transfer is approved, as we would like to bring the Ability Centre back into full use; and we have started talks about setting up a credit union which would be run from the complex.”
