NEXT weekend Peebles Rugby Club is hosting a race night with a difference - and every penny raised will go towards supporting Doddie Weir's fight against Motor Neurone Disease.

The towering rugby legend, who earned 61 caps for Scotland as well as representing the British Lions, was diagnosed with the MND more than 18 months ago.

From the outset, Doddie has been driven to help fellow sufferers and seek ways to further research into this, as yet, incurable disease.

Last November Doddie and his Trustees, who include Scott Hastings, Finlay Calder, John Jeffrey and Gary Armstrong, launched the registered charity My Name’5 Doddie Foundation to raise funds to aid research, to make grants to individuals suffering from MND and to enable them to live as fulfilled a life as possible.

Next Friday Peebles Rugby Club will host Doddie’5 Big Wind Up.

The event is being organised by Tom Menzies and Neil Hughes, and is being billed as a 'race night with a difference' featuring human jockeys on mechanically-propelled horses.

A spokesman told us: "The event also includes fund-raising activities like Take Your Pick and, whilst fund-raising is the principal focus, there are some great prizes on offer.

"It promises to be a fun-filled evening with audience participation."
