GALASHIELS townsfolk flocked to the Burgh Chambers this evening to catch a first glimpse of this year's Braw Lad and Braw Lass.

Greg Kelly and Kimberley O'May stepped onto the balcony and were greeted with cheers and applause.

And both are relishing the opportunity of representing the town this year.

Greg, 21, attended St Peter's Primary and Galashiels Academy and is now a a sales assistant at Booker Wholesale.

He said: "I am ecstatic. I am glad the secret is out.

"I have followed the Gathering all my life, since I was a wee boy."

Braw Lass Kimberley, 25, attended Caddonfoot Primary and Galashiels Academy.

She is now an administration assistant at Scottish Borders Council.

She told us: "I am delighted. I can't wait for the summer ahead, especially the Gala week.

"I am also looking forward to visiting other towns and festivals."

The new Braw Lad and Braw Lass were unveiled by President of the Gathering Bill White, who was carrying out his first official duty in the role after taking over from David Romanis.

He said: "It has been a really good night. The kids in particular have really enjoyed themselves.

"I was very nervous and had a dry throat to begin with, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Walking out onto the balcony to so many people takes you aback a bit.

"But Greg and Kimberley are great ambassadors for the town. They are young and they are the future of Galashiels."

And good luck to Greg and Kimberley from everyone at the Border Telegraph!
