Rumours that Eshiels Recycling Centre is closing its doors have been rubbished by Scottish Borders Council.

Concerns were raised from locals in Peeblesshire who had heard that the well-used recycling centre was being closed for good.

However, council officers have refuted the claims stating that the service times have been tailored to ensure savings are made to their tight budget.

SBC said: “The council has undertaken a review of its community recycling centre opening hours.

“As a result, all recycling centres will be open at weekends. However, all seven recycling centres will be closed for one weekday at least.

“The review aims to tailor the service to better meet the needs of the Borders public at our recycling centres, as well as ensuring savings can be made at a time when budgets are tighter than ever and demands for services are increasing.”

The council said the decision was approved as part of the 2018/19 budget and is expected to be introduced later this year.

The spokesperson continued: “Staff and trade unions have been, and continue to be, consulted regarding how the service changes will be delivered.”
